Day 5: Sawadee Phee Mai!
Monday, January 1, 2007

Today was another low key day.  Especially with the bombings, we spend most of the day in the hospital or at home.  Renata and Alissa went to Chiang Mai, and Paul and Tina left for Phuket in the morning.  Andrew and I met with Jesse and Andrew’s dad for breakfast at the hospital.  My dad told us to tell people that I was his daughter if I wanted to get good service.  I thought that was a bit ridiculous (we’re used to bad service in Seattle anyway), and then the fact that I spilled coffee all over my shirt didn’t help matters.  Turns out that the SBUX in my parents’ hospital will take my SBUX card from the US, so that was fun.

We tried to get congee at Dairy Express (the cafeteria downstairs), but the station was closed for the new year.  Instead, we all enjoyed a round of McRice burgers.  :)

For lunch, Dad took us to a nondescript Thai place about 2 km from the hospital called Rosabiang Thai Restaurant.  It had a train theme and had a huge model train set running through the center of the restaurant.  It was also amazing.

We didn’t do much in the afternoon.  I took a nap and did laundry.  Andrew continued to diagnose my parents’ computer (diagnosis - a little bit of spyware and not enough RAM).

That evening, we went to the JW Marriott where we got to sample all of the dishes that will be served at our reception.  Jesse joined us again, and we met up with my uncle and aunt (dad’s brother and his wife).  We sampled the food in the Man Ho restaurant (something that Andrew found to be hilarious given the huge number of transvestites and prostitutes that we had encountered so far), and we were given a private dining room with a living room area.

It was bizarre.  We had several wait staff, and this one woman seemed quite sweet, but when she would go back into the food-prep area, you could see her yelling at the girl that was still in training.

The food was delicious.  For each course, we got to rate each dish and leave comments.  I gave every dish (except the mushroom dish) a 10/10.  My mom was much harsher though.  The Shark Fin Soup was graded an “OK” whereas the other dishes got “Pretty Good”.  LOL.

During the course of the meal, Peter Caprez (general manager of the hotel) gave us a call and was very gracious.  The acting manager of the hotel also came down to greet us and to tell us to contact her with any questions or concerns.  It was very impressive.

We went home and fell into a food coma.  :)
